Cannabis Terpene Analysis

Terpenes are a  group of volatile, unsaturated hydrocarbons found in cannabis and other plants. They are primarily responsible for the characteristic smells and odours generated in cannabis. The most common terpenes found in cannabis are typically myrcene, limonene, alpha and beta pinene. However, there have been over 100 different terpenes identified in cannabis plants and every cannabis strain will have slightly different terpene profiles. Terpenes have very low odour threshold values in the low parts per billion ranges and can quickly become a nuisance odour to neighboring homes and businesses.

Terpene emissions can be sampled by concentrating a large volume of source air onto a specially designed adsorbent tube. The tube is then rinsed with a specific solvent in which the terpenes are dissolved. The solvent solution is then analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and the terpenes are identified. In order to properly control the odours from a cannabis production facility it is important to identify and quantify the types of terpenes present. Once these factors are identified an odour control strategy can be developed and implemented.

ORTECH has the ability to sample for and analyze terpene's within our laboratory network and develop and odour control strategy based on the results.
